RECAP: Warriors 114, Mavs 104 - Time to 'Step up'

Final Yahoo! boxscore

Top flight point guards are a must in this league

It's March Madness and the Warriors improved their chances by making it to the NBA versions of the big 'dance.'  The Warriors 'took it to the streets' last night.  If the Warriors were Omarion and Marques Houston, then the Mavs were those nameless kids with the overly spikey hair from the OC (why is it that they have to make the white kids have really spikey hair?).  Meaning?  Those suckas (Mavs) got served!  read more »

Mark Cuban Speaks the Truth

Count Dallas owner Mark Cuban among those NBA observers who don't mind the so-called madness going on in Memphis.

He just questions the method sometimes used by Griz owner Michael Heisley, who Cuban communicates with as a friend. Asked to elaborate on his critical comments regarding the Grizzlies' decision to unload Pau Gasol for essentially draft picks and salary-cap relief, Cuban reiterated that the Griz could have received more for the skilled 7-footer.  read more »

Nuggets Hand Nets Eighth Straight Loss

(Boulder-CO) The Denver Nuggets once again received three 20+ efforts and were able to hand the New Jersey Nets their eighth-straight loss while winning their seventh-straight home game, 100-85. The Nuggets played a combination of stingy defense and consistent offense to subdue the Nets by keeping them two steps behind for the entire game. In the first half, the Nuggets and the Nets were both struggling offensively and were shooting the exact same lousy percentage from the field. However, the Nuggets were in cruise control at halftime by means of a 16-point lead due to getting to the free-throw line far more frequently and making more of their attempts. In fact, it was the only statistical shooting difference in the first numbing 24 minutes.  read more »

Kevin Martin & The NBA Scoring Title

Four years ago, Kevin Martin averaged 2.6 field goal attempts and 1.2 free throw attempt per game, for a scoring average of 2.9 pts. per game.

Three years ago, Kevin Martin averaged 7.6 field goal attempts and 3.1 free throw attempts for a scoring average of 10.9 pts. per game.

Two years ago, Kevin Martin averaged 13.3 field goal attempts and 7.1 free throw attempts for a scoring average of 20.2 pts. per game.

Last year, Kevin Martin averaged 15.0 field goal attempts and 9.5 free throw attempts for a scoring average of 23.7 pts. per game.

For Martin's career, if you take his shot attempts and free throw attempts and add them together, it comes pretty close to matching his scoring average.

In the 15 games that Ron Artest did not play last year and Kevin Martin did, he averaged 28.7 points pers game, which would have been good for 2nd in the NBA in scoring, behind only LeBron James. Martin actually finished 6th in scoring (7th if you include non-qualifier Dwyane Wade).  read more »

The Playoff Hokey-Pokey

(Boulder-CO) Sing it with me now The Nuggets put their right foot in the playoffs, they take their right foot out They take the second half off and they bring back all the reasons to doubt. Seriously, how are you going to play your best first half of the season after catapulting yourself into the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoff scenery and then allow a team to score 81 points in a half, swing the score 34 points, and lose?  read more »

So, Who's the Power Forward?

Point guards are so June.  Power forward is the new point guard.

The Clippers suddenly find themselves as the only player in the free agency market.  (A quick aside here:  How 'bout them Grizzlies?  They were so desperate to get rid of Pau Gasol to get some cap space, that they jumped at the Lakers' offer of Kwame Brown and some Universal Studios Hollywood annual passes.  And here they sit, the team with the most money to spend, and no one even discusses them.  The Grizzlies are the new Clippers.)  As much fun as it would be to make a run at Andre Iguodala, the Clippers clearly need someone to play power forward.  Thornton can get some minutes there, but he can't be the starter.  And we know what it's like to have Tim Thomas be your starting power forward.  So it would seem that something needs to be done.  read more »

What's A Nuggets Fan to Believe?

(Boulder-CO) Last night's game left me with a feeling of confusion unparalleled up to this point in the season. Here the Nuggets are on the outside looking into the crowded Western Conference playoff picture, they have been taking some bad losses, the whole situation is filled with enough pressure to make George Karl open another bag of cough drops, and the Nuggets find a way to put together quite possibly the best game of the year so far in a, 126-113, win against the Phoenix Suns.
So I ask you, Nuggets Nation: What's a Nuggets fan to believe? Are the Suns really struggling that bad to adapt after losing their best transition player for an aging, chubby, and easily winded Shaquille O'Neal or are the Nuggets really capable of playing like this on more than a once every-other week basis to become playoff bound?

Mr. Big Shot Comes Up Big In OT Against The Suns

The Pistons ended their two game losing streak in style with an overtime thriller at The Palace Monday evening against The Suns. This game could have went either way with the lead changing hands with minutes left in the game. It was Chauncey Billups' heroics along with a couple of huge plays from Rasheed Wallace that propelled Detroit to the 110-105 overtime win. Key Points: The Pistons were without Rip Hamilton, who didn't play with a sore left hip. Detroit was also short Juan Dixon who is now on the inactive list with a strained left calf. With the win, the Pistons notched their 50th win. They have now reached 50 wins the past seven seasons. Arron Afflalo got the start in Rip's absence. Arron played 21 minutes, scored 6 points, grabbed 4 boards with 3 assists and a steal on the night.  read more »

Hornets-Spurs: Monday News Wrap

Monday morning afternoon, and it looks like some people are starting to take the Hornets a little more seriously after their 19-point win in Game 1. Let's dive in...

Kicking off with Peter Finney's words in today's Times-Picayune...

  • I now have twin-vision about a team I picked to lose to Dallas in seven: I would not be surprised if the Hornets lost to the Spurs, nor would I be surprised if they won the NBA championship.

From a dude named Andrew Munger at some university site...  read more »
